Typhoon Matmo Hit Southern China Causing Massive Relocations

The powerful storm struck the coast on the southern shores of China on Sunday afternoon, shortly after passage over the island province of Hainan. Storm Details

Matmo, the 21st typhoon of 2025, had sustained wind speeds of 151km/h and poured more than 50mm of precipitation in a short period in Qinzhou and Chongzou. The city of Nanning also received significant rain amounts.

Matmo prompted China's highest-level red alert, with disruptions in Zhanjiang, where commercial activities, transport links and roads were closed. In the special administrative region, numerous air services were impacted and 30 cancelled.

Forecast and Movement

As Matmo moves inland towards Cao Bang province in the neighboring country, it is projected to weaken into a tropical depression with 55mph winds but will continue to bring substantial precipitation. Northern Vietnam could face 130-150mm on Monday, raising the threat of flooding and mudslides. The weather pattern is expected to move towards Yunnan province in China, where additional heavy rainfall is probable.

Other Storm Systems

Meanwhile, Hurricane Priscilla developed off the Pacific shoreline of Mexico on the weekend, first as a storm system. It prompted a weather alert for the southwestern areas from a coastal point to another location on Monday.

In the early hours of Sunday, Priscilla was about 305 miles from Cabo Corrientes with continuous gusts of 105km/h. It strengthened into a severe cyclone in the evening, when sustained winds reached at 75mph.

Though not expected to hit the coast, the storm is likely to generate dangerous waves and rip currents as it tracks north-west along the coast towards a Mexican state. Heavy rainfall is predicted on the coming day, amounting to 100-150mm in specific Mexican states, with local totals at about 20 centimeters. Colima and western Jalisco could face moderate to heavy rain.

The storm, which has moved in a southwestern direction and weakened, is forecast to recurve towards the east into the Arabian Sea. Turbulent waters are likely to persist along the coastal stretch and heavy rainfall is anticipated in coastal districts including Dwarka, Jamnagar and Surat.
