The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The speculation about The Game Awards was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
