Storm Amy strikes areas in the UK, delivering wind and rain warnings.

Storm damage across the UK

Storm Amy has swept into the UK, delivering heavy rain and strong winds to extensive areas across the country.

High-Level Alert for Northern and Western Scotland

An amber wind warning is in place for areas within Scotland's northern and western regions, where the Met Office are warning of electricity outages and flying debris that could threaten safety.

A lower level yellow warning for winds has been issued for all of Scotland and Northern Ireland, as well as Wales and north-west England, until Saturday evening.

Tragically, a man in his 40s lost his life in the Irish Republic in what police described as a "storm-related event."

Rain and Wind Alerts Throughout the UK

Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland and north-west England also have a yellow rain warning in place.

Parts of Northern Ireland were subject to a high-level wind alert on Friday morning, and numerous schools shut their doors ahead of schedule as a safety measure.

Roughly 50,000 homes there are dealing with electricity loss at this time, according to the local power network.

Local police authorities said the train services were halted due to multiple trees falling, while airports warned passengers to confirm flight details before traveling.

The wind alert at yellow level for these affected regions will stay active until midnight on Saturday.

A alert for heavy rainfall at the yellow level covering large parts of Scotland will persist until Saturday midnight.

Transportation Issues and Service Cancellations

  • Several ScotRail services and boat services were called off ahead of the storm's arrival.
  • Certain bridges will be shut for tall vehicles.
  • Rail operators announced all services out of Glasgow Central have been suspended until at least 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Trajectory of Storm Amy

Amy, which is the inaugural named storm this season will travel northward across the UK through Friday evening, when peak wind conditions are forecast.

A cold front will also drift downwards, bringing heavy rain.

Overnight, the winds will peak across Scottish regions as heavy rain sweeps southeast across England and Wales, before lessening in intensity later on Saturday.

Despite Saturday remaining quite gusty, there will be a combination of bright intervals and rainfall, primarily affecting northern and western parts of the UK.

Forecast for the Weekend

Come Sunday, the storm will have shifted into the North Sea so it will be less rainy with calmer winds for the weekend's conclusion.

The next storm name will be Bram. A fresh set of names is issued every year by the Met Office before the season starts in September with both male and female names chosen by the public.

Weather systems may receive names from either the UK's Met Office, Ireland's Met Éireann, or the Netherlands' KNMI when impacts are forecast to be "moderate to severe."
