Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
